What is an Open class?
Open classes are our regular Hatha Yoga classes, which are open to any student of the appropriate level. Several Open classes are offered every day, from introductory through advanced levels. Please choose a class of the appropriate level to attend (to choose a class, see the Class Descriptions). Open classes can be reserved up to 2 weeks in advance.
Do I need a reservation?
Reservations are available for both studios. Reservations are not required; however, if a class becomes full, priority will be given to students who have reservations.
Are Intro/Level 1 and Level1/2 classes different from regular Intro and Level 1 classes? Can I take them?
Intro/Level 1 and Level 1/2 Classes are combination-level classes where students of both levels are welcome to practice together. Instructors teach at a level that is appropriate for all students, and will modify poses as necessary to accommodate everyone. (Please note that the Intro/Level 1 classes are a little more challenging than the regular Intro classes. First-time beginning level students are recommended to go to a regular Intro class for their first 2-3 months before trying the Intro/Level 1 class.)
Can I watch a class to see what it’s like?
Unfortunately, it is not possible, for two reasons. First, to respect the students in class. Doing yoga requires one’s full attention and focus, and being watched can be distracting, to say the least. We try to maintain a comfortable atmosphere where our students can focus on their practice as fully as possible. Second, experiencing yoga by doing it is far superior to watching; it is not something to be observed from outside, rather, something to be experienced from within. If you’d like to try a class, please come and do so!
What should I wear?
Please wear non-restrictive clothing that you can move easily in, but which is not so loose that it gets in the way. A fitted T-shirt and gym pants are fine. Expect to be barefoot for class. Also, please remove large jewelry and refrain from wearing strong perfume. A changing room furnished with shelves and hangers is available at the studio for your use.
How should I prepare for class or workshop?
Please arrive on time for class; late arrivals interrupt the rest of the class. Please turn off your cellphone, or set it on silent mode. Refrain from eating a large meal within 2-3 hours prior to class; do be well-hydrated. Leave water bottles and personal items in the dressing room. Ladies, please inform the instructor if you are on your menses; some poses should be avoided during that time of the month. Please be sure to inform the instructor if you have any physical problems or injuries that might affect your practice
Do I need to buy or bring a mat or any other prop?
When and how do I pay for class?
If possible, pay for class before it begins. However, if it’s your first visit and you are not sure whether to pay for a single class or buy a ticket, feel free to take class first and pay the instructor when class is finished. If you decide to buy a ticket that day, your ticket can be used for that first class. All transactions are on a cash basis. Workshops must be paid for in advance and cancelation policies apply. Workshop spaces available after online registration has closed can be registered and payed for directly in the studio only.
Do men do yoga?
Yes! They certainly do! Although yoga is more popular with women, the number of male students is increasing, and we encourage you to join. All you need is a t-shirt and pair of comfortable pants, a flexible mind and an open heart.
Are classes taught in Japanese or English?
Unless otherwise indicated on the schedule, all classes are taught in Japanese, with main points in English as needed.
YOGAMOMS: What does my baby do during Yogamoms class?
Yogamoms class is a chance for new moms to do yoga while caring for their babies. Babies don’t do yoga in this class, mom does! We provide towels for babies to lie on while mom is doing yoga, and, if the baby needs attention, mom can stop her practice and attend to her baby. It’s okay to nurse, change diapers, and hold the baby when it’s fussy. Some moms do yoga while holding their babies; others sit in comfortable relaxation poses and nurse. Some poses are done while holding the baby, too. We try to make moms and babies feel as comfortable as possible.
YOGAMOMS: What should I bring to Yogamoms Class?
Please bring a small towel or blanket to put under your baby, extra diapers, a change of clothes, and something for your baby to drink. If your baby is breastfeeding, you are welcome to nurse during class, or you can give your baby a bottle. Please don’t bring food into the studio, and bring a minimum of toys. Mom--don’t forget to bring comfortable clothes that you can do yoga in—for information, see above. Feel free to borrow one of the studio’s yoga mats. As stroller parking is limited, please bring your babyto class in a sling or baby carrier.
What about sharing tickets?
Your tickets can be used to introduce a friend to Shizen. Remember first time visitors must fill out a waiver form before class.
Tickets can be shared between two friends or with family members but the ticket card must be present with whomever attends the class.
Only unexpired tickets will be honored.
